Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort sits on its own private motu (islet) and is one of the most self-contained escapes in the Cook Islands; every room comes pre-loaded with kayaks, a SUP board, bicycles and snorkelling gear so you rarely need to think about what to do next.

Ranginui Sunset offers three self-contained bungalows on a quiet beach at the northern tip of Aitutaki, sitting comfortably in the budget to mid-range category.

There are two one-bedroom bungalows, each with a king bed or split king (two singles), plus an additional two singles in the dining and lounge area, making them ideal for couples or small groups. The third is a studio-style bungalow, still fully equipped with cooking facilities, a bathroom and shower.

All units are fully self-contained with a kitchen, and there's a washing machine on-site along with drinking water provided.

Our favourite spots are the dining area on the beach under the shade of the palms and the secluded beach with its swimming pontoon. Next door is the Marine Research Centre, where you can check out the giant clams.

Located where most of the lagoon action is, Ootu Beach, Popoara Ocean Breeze Villas is well worth considering if you’re on a budget. As we discovered during our last stay, their spacious garden villas rival those of the mid-range villas available on the island in terms of presentation, yet also have the added convenience of vehicle rentals on-site, as well as the popular Boat Shed bar.
