While we have already touched on sunset cruises of the lagoon, if it’s out of your price range or not a good time, then no worries. More adventures on the lagoon await with affordable group tours visiting One Foot Island and stunning snorkelling spots.
For something more intimate, private charters of the lagoon are also available. We compare them all in the 10 Best Lagoon Cruises in Aitutaki.

Not all of the action is on the lagoon. The main island of Aitutaki boasts a rich history and numerous hidden gems to discover. The island is easy to navigate via car, scooter or even bike if you’re really fit (but we recommend the former two options to avoid the heat).
There’s nothing more romantic than getting cosy on a scooter together! Check out sights to stop at in A Self-Guided Day Trip Around Aitutaki and find places to eat in The Food Guide to Aitutaki.

When night falls and the sky is clear, the universe puts on the most mesmerising show, made all the clearer thanks to Aitutaki’s lack of light pollution. Use the telescope provided at Aitutaki Escape or choose an accommodation with minimal illumination, like Etu Moana, that allows for excellent stargazing.
If you can time your visit between late April and late May, Aitutaki captures amazing views of the Eta Aquariids meteor shower.
Location: All over Aitutaki. See The Best Spots for Stargazing in the Cook Islands for specific locations.

Every year between July and October, Aitutaki’s warm waters provide shelter for humpback whales migrating from the Antarctic to raise their young. See these gentle giants for yourself and even have the privilege of swimming with them on a whale excursion with Wet & Wild or Bubbles Below.
While snorkelling with the whales feels like a solitary experience, you’ll have a lot to talk about together after the matter – trust us!

For a more independent experience on the Aitutaki Lagoon, hire a water taxi to take you to one of the uninhabited motu (islets). There you can spend a few hours or even a full day on your own little piece of paradise, whether to enjoy snorkelling, exploring, sunbathing or indulging in an island picnic.
You never know, it could be the perfect place to pop the question. It’s one that we suggest in our Cook Islands Proposal Ideas: 5 Romantic Ways to Propose.

Sunsets are magical on Aitutaki, especially as there are so many stunning beachfront accommodations along the west coast. Make the experience extra special for either sunrise or sunset by hiking to the top of the island’s highest peak, Maunga Pu.
We say “hike,” but it will only take you 20-30 minutes to reach the top, where you’re greeted with expansive views of the rest of the main island and the lagoon, dotted with motus.
Location: West coast of Aitutaki between Paradise Cove and Tai Marino. Park on the abandoned lot opposite the Maunga Pu sign or drive up the tar-sealed road and park at the intersection where the road turns to grass. The summit is left from the intersection.
