1. Ranginui’s Retreat
With a beachfront location and lagoon views, Ranginui’s Retreat offers a luxury location for an affordable price. The garden units come at the most irresistible prices, ideal for solo travellers and couples. Fisherfolk can cast right from the accommodation, while those looking to relax can make use of the beach loungers and the swimming pool. The cheapest units have breakfast-making facilities, while the restaurants of Ootu Beach will keep the hunger at bay throughout the day.

One of the limited budget guesthouses/backpackers on Aitutaki, Aitutaki Budget Accommodation is ideal for the solo traveller or couple looking to save some cents and/or get a more local experience. 3. Gina’s Garden Lodges
Although a little out of the way toward the south of Aitutaki’s main island, Gina’s Garden Lodges boasts very competitive prices. Although each lodge sleeps four adults or a family of five, there are no penalties if you want to stay here solo. In fact, it’s one of the most affordable solo rates on the island! Kids love the mezzanine bedroom, while the cooking facilities help keep the holiday costs to a minimum. Oh, and this accommodation is actually owned by a Cook Islands queen, so it can’t be that bad.

4. Popoara Ocean Breeze Villas
Located where most of the lagoon action is at, Ootu Beach, Popoara Ocean Breeze Villas is well worth considering if you’re on a budget. Their spacious villas rival those of the mid-range villas available on the island in terms of presentation, yet also have the added convenience of vehicle rentals on-site, as well as the popular Boat Shed bar. Nestled among gardens away from the bar, however, you won’t hear a peep from the karaoke nights.
5. Matriki Beach Huts
If you’re looking for that beachfront bungalow experience without paying a premium then check out Matriki Beach Huts. These characterful bungalows are all a little different but equally rustic. One has an ensuite while the others have their own showers and a shared toilet at the back of the property. The bungalows also offer self-catering facilities, while the nearby resorts are a good dining option. Bikes are free of charge.

6. Sunny Beach Lodge
Everyone is welcome at Sunny Beach Lodge with two beachfront bungalows ideal for couples and adults, while the garden units are perfect for families. The budget accommodation is well located in Amuri, close to grocery stores, should you want to make use of your room’s cooking facilities, as well as the Pacific Resort and its restaurant. Note that this accommodation only accepts cash or bank transfer.
7. Amuri Sands
Despite promoting itself as budget self-catering accommodation, Amuri Sands is still a little on the pricey side compared to other accommodations on this list. Regardless, the accommodation consists of two simply-styled studio bungalows on the beach offering effortless seclusion. The kitchens are well-equipped where you can pick up supplies at three nearby grocery stores.
8. Petero’s Place
Petero’s Place offers just three affordable studio bungalows on the southwestern shores of Aitutaki. Bungalows are set among tropical gardens with an often secluded beach just across the road. The fixtures and fittings are a little “classic” but functional and charming nonetheless, while your airy bungalow has tiled floors to keep the place cool. Note that a cleaning fee is charged on top of the daily rate but discounts are available for long-term stays (7 days, etc.)
9. Vaikoa Beach Units
Wedged between the sandy shores of Aitutaki’s western beach and the island’s highest peak, Maunga Pu, Vaikoa Beach Units are a self-contained budget accommodation. Choose from units in the garden or on the beachfront, either way, you will have access to kayaks, cooking and laundry facilities. The units are pretty basic but are functional enough for a non-pretentious stay on Aitutaki.
10. Amuri Guesthouse
When it’s open, Amuri Guesthouse is another excellent backpacker/budget option on Aitutaki. There are single, double and triple occupancy rooms sharing a well-equipped communal kitchen and bathroom. It’s a little inland, so you’ll often share the grounds with roosters and pigs, but it’s just a three-minute walk to the beach, local takeaways and grocery stores. Call ahead, as the owner is sometimes out of the country.
